King Street runs the length of the suburb as one of Sydney's longest continuous retail strips, and Enmore Road continues the pattern. A very large share of that frontage is shop below and dwelling above, frequently in the same nineteenth-century building, and a high proportion of the ground floor is food premises. That combination shapes most of what we get called to here. Across the inner west, a licensed local plumber is only minutes away, same-day and 24/7 for genuine emergencies.
Common plumbing problems we see in Newtown

My hot water system failed and it isn't that old. Why?
Soft water is why. Scale finishes tanks in hard-water regions and Sydney is not one. Here the sacrificial anode is consumed protecting the steel and the tank then starts corroding, or an element fails. Both are frequently repairs rather than replacements.
We live above a restaurant and the drain keeps blocking. Is that their fault?
It might be, and it might not, and guessing helps nobody. What is true is that a commercial kitchen puts fats and oils into a line at a volume no residence produces, so where the drainage is shared the flat above experiences the consequences of a kitchen it does not control. What is also true is that in buildings converted and reconverted for a century, almost nobody has a record of what is actually connected to what. A camera settles it in about an hour, and a finding is worth more than a month of correspondence.
Do you work on heritage and conservation-area homes?
Most of this housing is nineteenth century, built as shops with dwellings above and altered continually since. Practically that means original rough-ins that suit nothing modern, pipework added to by every owner and every tenant, and internal layouts that have been changed more times than anyone has recorded.
Who is responsible for a grease blockage in a shared line?
That follows from the leases and the ownership, which are documents we are not party to, so it is not ours to rule on. What we can do is establish exactly where the material is coming from and where the line runs, in writing. Trade waste obligations sit with the commercial operator rather than with a residence, and Sydney Water is the authority on what those obligations actually are. We will point you there rather than guessing at it.
